Emergency lighting keeps escape routes, exits and key areas visible when the main power supply fails, giving people the best chance of leaving a building safely in an emergency. QUESTIONS
Is emergency lighting a legal requirement?
Yes. For most non-domestic premises, emergency lighting is required under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and should meet BS 5266. Your fire risk assessment identifies where it is needed, and we can design and install a compliant system.
What is BS 5266?
BS 5266 is the British Standard and code of practice for emergency lighting. It sets out where emergency lighting is needed, how bright it should be, how long it must stay on and how it should be tested. Every system we install is designed to meet it.
What is the difference between maintained and non-maintained emergency lighting?
Maintained emergency lighting stays on at all times, which is common for illuminated exit signs. Non-maintained lighting only comes on when the mains power fails. Many buildings use a mix of both, and we will advise on the right setup for yours.
How long does emergency lighting need to stay on during a power cut?
Depending on the type of premises, emergency lighting usually needs to stay on for between one and three hours after a power failure. This gives everyone enough time to leave safely, and we design each system to the correct duration for your building.
Where do I need emergency lighting?
Emergency lighting is needed along escape routes, at exits and stairs, at changes of level or direction, near fire alarm call points and firefighting equipment, and in larger open areas to prevent panic. We survey your premises and make sure every required area is covered.
Why does the annual test take several hours?
The annual test runs your emergency lighting for its full rated duration, usually up to three hours, to prove the batteries can last a real power cut. It is best done when the building can be left to recharge afterwards, and we will plan the timing around you.
Can you test and maintain a system another company installed?
Yes. We are happy to take over the testing and maintenance of your existing emergency lighting, whoever installed it, and can upgrade or repair any parts that no longer meet the standard.
What happens if my emergency lighting fails a test?
If a fitting fails, we repair or replace it and re-test so your system is compliant again. We will always explain what needs doing and why before carrying out any work.
Do you provide certification for my fire safety records?
Yes. After testing or installation we provide the certification you need for your fire safety file, insurers and any inspecting authority, giving you a clear record that your system is compliant.
